Contrary to what you may believe, saving money can be painless. It can even be a little fun with the right approach. It’s possible to save lots of money with some minor adjustments in your spending habits. The trick is to save your savings. In other words, if you spend the money you save, you’re not gaining any ground
Most of the following tips can be put in action today!
Save your change
This is one of my favorite ways to save. Acorns is a cool app that rounds up all your purchases to the nearest dollar and puts this “spare change” in an investment account. This is done automatically. As a result, you barely notice.
Change your lightbulbs
Are you still using incandescent bulbs? Get out of the Stone Age and switch to fluorescent or LED bulbs. Switching 10 bulbs can save $150 each year.
Auto Deposit each week
If you get paid by auto deposit, open another checking account and have your employer auto deposit a set amount of your weekly pay into it. Then, forget about it! You can deposit $5, $10, $20, $50, or $100 each pay day. Subsequently, at the end of the year, you will have a nice little (or big) stash.
Shop after the holidays
For example, after Christmas, retail stores are anxious to get rid of the leftover inventory, so everything is on sale. The best deals are available right after the holiday season.
Drink more water
Water is essentially free. It’s also better for you than anything you’re going to purchase at the store. I purchased a water filter for my tap, and I keep two pitchers of cold filtered tap water in my refrigerator. I have insulated cups for when I’m on the go.
Take advantage of happy hour
If you’re going out with friends for a few drinks, find a local happy hour with a great bar menu. The serving sizes are usually plenty for dinner.
Wait, there is more…
Take advantage of the deal websites
Groupon is perhaps the best-known website in this category. Get a haircut for $5 and put the $10 you saved in the bank.
Save your savings
Whether you saved $3 with a coupon or received a $2 rebate in the mail, ensure that money finds its way into your savings account.
Drop your cable
How much is it costing you each year? $1,200? Some of the top alternatives are Hulu, Peacock, Netflix, and Sling TV.
Have a vegetarian dinner at least once each week
The meat is the most expensive part of the meal. Meatless Monday is the new fad.
Grocery Shop from the weekly sales flyer
For instance, look through the weekly sales flyer first to see if the items on special will work for you.
Drink the coffee at work
It’s probably free. You can purchase flavored creamers, if you want to jazz it up.
In conclusion
Once you get into the habit of saving, it becomes automatic. You’ll discover new ways to add to your growing account. As a result, you’ll have a savings account you can be proud of, and all it took was a little creativity and focus!
